Following his education at Sainik School Bijapur in Karnataka, M. V. Suchindra Kumar successfully completed the National Defence Academy (NDA) entrance exam. After three years of rigorous military training at the NDA in Pune, Maharashtra, he joined the Indian Military Academy (IMA) in Dehradun, Uttarakhand in 1984. He completed a year’s training at IMA and was commissioned into the Indian Army in June 1985. His academic pursuits continued with a master’s degree in Strategic Studies from the Defence Services Staff College (DSSC) in Wellington, Tamil Nadu. He further enhanced his expertise with a master’s degree in philosophy in National Security and Strategic Study from the National Defence College (NDC) in New Delhi.

Career
Commissioned into the Indian Army in June 1985 as a Second Lieutenant in the 1st Battalion of the Assam Regiment, Lt. Gen. Kumar’s career has been marked by progressive responsibility and distinguished service. His early career included attending the Young Officers (YO) course at the Army War College in Mhow. He subsequently progressed to become a company commander and later attended the Junior Command (JC) course at the same institution. He commanded a battalion of the Assam Regiment as a Colonel. His service extended to Jammu and Kashmir where he led the 59th Battalion of the Rashtriya Rifles (Assam), participating in numerous counter-insurgency operations.
Further assignments included postings in New Delhi within the Military Secretary (MS) Branch, and international roles with the United Nations. He served as the Sector Senior Operations Officer in the Transitional Authority in Cambodia, and as part of an Indian Army training team in Lesotho. He’s also participated in various international military courses, including those in Sri Lanka and Egypt. His career trajectory also saw him serve as an instructor at the Army War College in Mhow. As a Brigadier, he commanded the 120 Infantry Brigade along the Line of Control. Subsequent promotions led to command of an Infantry Division at the Line of Control, and the role of Additional Director General of Military Intelligence (ADGMI). His appointment as Lieutenant General saw him take charge of the White Knight Corps (XVI Corps) in Nagrota, followed by the post of Director General of Military Intelligence (DGMI). He then served as Deputy Chief of Army Staff (Strategy) before assuming the esteemed position of Vice Chief of Army Staff (VCOAS).
