    Commissioned into the Indian Army in June 1985 as a Second Lieutenant in the 1st Battalion of the Assam Regiment, Lt. Gen. Kumar’s career has been marked by progressive responsibility and distinguished service. His early career included attending the Young Officers (YO) course at the Army War College in Mhow. He subsequently progressed to become a company commander and later attended the Junior Command (JC) course at the same institution. He commanded a battalion of the Assam Regiment as a Colonel. His service extended to Jammu and Kashmir where he led the 59th Battalion of the Rashtriya Rifles (Assam), participating in numerous counter-insurgency operations.

He served as the Sector Senior Operations Officer in the Transitional Authority in Cambodia, and as part of an Indian Army training team in Lesotho. As a Brigadier, he commanded the 120 Infantry Brigade along the Line of Control. His appointment as Lieutenant General saw him take charge of the White Knight Corps (XVI Corps) in Nagrota, followed by the post of Director General of Military Intelligence (DGMI). He then served as Deputy Chief of Army Staff (Strategy) before assuming the esteemed position of Vice Chief of Army Staff (VCOAS).
